This is a 'shibori' cotton. Shibori is a method of tie-dye whereby small areas of fabric are gathered and either sewn or whipped, so that when the fabric is immersed in the dye, the tied areas form a resist. If you look at the close-ups of this cotton, you can see where the needle holes from when it was sewn before dyeing. These shibori cottons make wonderful scarves. The fabric will stretch to about 15" wide if you press it, but the Japanese value the texture and it does add insulation if you're wearing it as a scarf.
